Woman Beaten to Death at McDonald’s for Refusing to Give Her Phone Number [GRAPHIC, UPDATED]

This is a terrible story, and does not end well.

Miss Wu has out having dinner at McDonald’s on May 28 in Zhaoyuan, Shandong Province.

Mr Zhang was also at that McDonald’s. Zhang was there having dinner with his friends, and upon seeing Wu, Zhang asked her for her phone number. Wu refused, and perhaps because he had lost face in front of his friends, Zhang may not have reacted well to this rejection.

An argument broke out. Then, a physical dispute. Then, all of Zhang’s friends joined in. They beat her, violently. As described by a Weibo user named @无主蜜桃 who was an eyewitness, Zhang and his friends kicked her in the head when Wu was lying on the ground. Then, they used an iron bar to strike her head. They continued until the iron bar broke.

Emergency responders confirmed that Wu died at the scene. Except for this very brief and violent conflict, Wu and Zhang were total strangers.

The Weibo eyewitness describes this incident occurring from 9:10pm to 9:30pm. The McDonald’s is located across the street from a local police station.

No one was reported to have tried to help the victim.

Here is some live video at the scene, but it is very shaky and does not show many details. However, it does align with what a number of bystanders said they saw.

UPDATE 11:52am May 31, 2014. The People’s Daily Online has a very different take on this story, reporting the six people involved in the attack as all part of an “evil cult” who were trying to enlist a new member.

Of the people arrested, one is still a minor and can’t be charged as an adult. The rest will be charged with intentional homicide.

CCTV reports that the attackers had warned spectators to refrain from intervening by saying, “We’ll kill anyone who gets involved!” as well as saying horrible things to the victim like “[once I kill you,] you’ll never come back in the next life”.

Scared of a Beating, Guangzhou Doctor Jumps Out of Window

The recent announcement that police presence will be ramped up at Guangdong hospitals may have to do with incidents like this one.

A woman named Yi has a long-standing grievance with the Shijing People’s Hospital in the Baiyun District of Guangzhou. For ten long years, Yi has tried to taken the hospital to court, but has always been unsuccessful. Never one to consider that she may in fact be wrong, Yi has come to the hospital on several occasions lately to air her grievances in person.

This time, Yi has brought along family members for support, reports 21CN. According to an eyewitness, Yi and her family arrived at the gynecology department and, without first saying a word, began to beat a female doctor with fists and kicks. As the male family members locked the door and prevented anyone from coming in, Yi took out a knife with a 20-30 cm blade.

When security guards finally gained access to the room, they tried to separate the family from the doctor, but were unsuccessful due to the threat of the weapon. Yi and her family continued to beat the doctor, an altercation that lasted approximately 30-40 minutes in total. It wasn’t until the doctor climbed through the window of the examination room that she was finally able to escape, crying as she ran.

The doctor sustained a concussion and bruising throughout her body while the family was taken away to a police station.

And the reason for Yi’s imagined injustice? Yi’s daughter, born ten years ago to the doctor she was beating, suffers from cerebral palsy that Yi believes was caused by the doctor’s improper use of retractors.

[Graphic] Video shot by journalist shows father violently abusing his teenaged son

A video has surfaced online that depicts the continued assault of a teenaged boy by his father in Chengdu, Sichuan.

Alerted by a tip, a journalist takes position across from the balcony and records the abuse. From noon until 8pm on March 31, the reporter counts 17 beatings inflicted upon the youth by both the mother and father.

The abuse takes place upon a balcony that doubles as the boy’s bedroom, even during winter months. Having dropped out of middle school earlier this year, the boy rarely leaves the house and only eats two meals a day. The boy stated that the reason for the beating was because he stole a sausage from the other renters that share the flat.

Police have intervened, whereby a councilor has been appointed to help the father and son reconcile their differences.

The boy’s interview with a reporter revealed the extent of any reconciliation to be had:

One time, I stepped on mother’s slipper while I was sweeping the floor; father gave me a beating. Father hadn’t finished drinking; when I took a sip; I got beaten so badly my nose bled. Once when I made noodles and used up the last of the remaining vegetables in the house, father gave me a beating. This Spring Festival I received RMB 200 in lucky red envelope money. I used RMB 30 to buy a toy gun and some firecrackers; father said I wasted money, and beat me.

Four Chengguan officials convicted for accepting bribes and abuse of power

While it may be common knowledge that Chengguan officials are susceptible to taking bribes, the issue has yet to come to court in Guangzhou. That is until now. On April 18th, Huangpu District’s Intermediate Court convicted four Chengguan urban management officers for breach of authority. According to the Nanfang Daily, the four officers, three of them named Luo, and one Zhu, were sentenced to between 14 and 18 months imprisonment for accepting bribes and assault.

Originally recruited by the Dasha sub-district committee of Huangpu to supervise street vendors, the officers would dress in camouflage uniforms with red armbands and nightsticks. According to the court, between August 2010 and September of 2011, the four officers would take cigarettes without paying, and demand small cash bribes between 5RMB and 12RMB from street vendors.

A vendor, Shi, testified that he would have to pay for the officers cigarettes almost daily, otherwise he wouldn’t be allowed to set up his stall. Another vendor, Dong, told the court that he had to pay around 300RMB every month for the officer’s cigarettes and had been doing so for close to two years.

Two of the convicted officers plan to appeal.
