Is tap water safe?

I've heard conflicting advice on this subject... I have been drinking tap water in my Shenzhen apartment for a year.  My landlord said it was fine to do so, saying the pipes there are fine and he was doing it (he has no water machine there).  I realize he might just not want to supply a water machine.... but I've also been drinking tap water without a problem.  So my question... is this actually okay?  Is boiling water just a precaution more than anything?  As I said, it seems fine to me.... but if anybody knows for sure, I'd be curious to know.

Thanks.

I would say no.  You might be able to get away with occasionally drinking tap water if you must, as people often brush their teeth with it, for example, but I definitely wouldn't make it a regular habit.  I would say your landlord probably just didn't want to supply a machine.  They are cheap at Wal-Mart, so I'd pick one up.  Better safe than sorry, and they aren't expensive.
