Guangzhou’s Sparkling New Airport to Open in 2018

Transportation hub located right underneath

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport has announced it will open a brand new combination passenger terminal/transportation hub in 2018, just days after it opened a new third runway at the current terminal.

Terminal 2 of Baiyun Airport is expected to handle around 45 million passengers a year in 2020 and will cost about RMB 19 billion to build.

A new transport hub is being built underneath the terminal as well. The Guanghou-Foshan Metro will have a stop here, as will a subway serving the three cities of Guangzhou, Dongguan, and Shenzhen. Furthermore, a dedicated transportation line will connect the airport with the Guangzhou North Railway Station in addition to further plans for the transportation hub to provide high-speed rail service.

However, with all the infrastructure currently being developed, the biggest obstacle facing the airport isn’t a shortage of space on the ground, but up in the air.  The growing Chinese aviation market is seriously limited by restrictions on the airspace in China, which is making the launch of new travel routes more difficult.
