Beijing Rumored to Turn Back to Zhang Yimou for 2022 Olympic Opening Ceremonies

The famed Chinese director to reprise his 2008 role?

Famed Chinese director Zhang Yimou is rumored to be the leading candidate to plan the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics opening ceremony. In addition to his film credits, Zhang also directed the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games.

Xi’an Evening News reported Zhang as a front-runner, and while the decision has yet to be confirmed, it would certainly make sense. Zhang, who directed the promotional video for Bejing’s 2008 bid, also directed the 2022 promotional video. The video, titled Joyful Rendezvous Upon Pure Ice and Snow, features Beijing’s winter scenery, construction plans for the Games, China’s development in winter sports, and traditional culture.

There will of course be one noticeable difference should Zhang have the opportunity to direct another opening ceremony: he’ll be a lot older. In 2022, Zhang will be 71.

Zhang’s next film, The Great Wall, is set to be released in 2016 and will be the director’s first-ever English language film. With a budget of $135 million, the sci-fi action film starring Matt Damon, Willem Dafoe, and Andy Lau will be the most expensive film ever made in China.
